The evolution of the hand-cam was completely natural and driven by the development in cameras.
The first skydive hand-cam can be attributed to Mark Edwards using a Sony PC 1 attached to a cheap gardening glove. A .42 wide angle lens left a little bit to be desired but it was a great start.
Over the years personal video cameras changed dramatically becoming smaller and more powerful. The hand mount had to evolve with the camera and the SD mount is a product of that evolution.
